In Praise of New Colleague and Friend Thomas Bertels

Sometimes we get lucky with certain things in life. For me, I’m thinking about how I happened to become friends and colleagues with Thomas Bertels, co-author of “Fixing Work: A Tale of Designing Jobs Employees Love.”

Thomas is also the President and Founder of Purpose Works, a management consulting firm on a mission to make work more productive, valuable, meaningful and impactful.

I was at an online meeting of a New York HR organization when I heard this guy in the audience offered a really smart comment that got my attention. I decided to reach out to him and that resulted in an exchange of books we’d both written and an appearance on his podcast, “Work Matters” during which we discussed the power of executive coaching.

I experienced many things in conversation with Thomas. He is, as advertised, interested in meaningful conversations, fixing work and being impactful.

Talking with him was like playing tennis with a really great tennis partner!

His listening was strong, but his energy was the most notable part. He kept the conversation going like a great tennis rally in which you’re forced to hit good shot after good shot in a way that surprises yourself.

So, this is to thank Thomas, as well as to provide a not-too-subtle advertisement for my own expertise on the subject of executive coaching.

It was in THIS conversation that I was able to provide my most organized thoughts to date about the power of executive coaching. We discussed where the executive coaching field is going and what are some dangers lurking with organizations calling themselves executive coaches but who are nothing, in the words of Bruce Springsteen, but “a brilliant disguise.”

Please subscribe to Bertels’ “Work Matters.”
