Coaching & Developing the Emotionally Intelligent Team

I was gob smacked on the way to letting this year’s future exceptional executive coaches know that our www.icoachglobal.com Class of 2026 is now accepting applications for our program starting February 20, 2026.

Riveting my attention was “The Emotionally Intelligent Team - building collaborative groups that outperform the rest” book written by Vanessa Urch Druskat, with a forward from Daniel Goleman.

The book is IT! What do I mean? This is the best book on how to coach, consult and help make your team emotionally intelligent starting NOW. It’s also the most practical book on how to develop psychological safety on your team that I’ve ever read. More about that in a moment.

Like so much great research on emotional intelligence, Dr. Druskat’s well written book comes down to describing how to create norms which allow your team to use practical wisdom- i.e.- emotional intelligence.

Dr. Druskat, who is an Associate Professor of Organizational Behavior, probably has had most of this book in her head for the past ten or more years while she was busy consulting and teaching. She’s been affiliated with the Consortium for Research on Emotional Intelligence for many years and is now serving on the executive board of that organization.

She’s also a kind, easy-to-relate to and humble person who is happy to share her work. Speaking to her in the accompanying interview, I was delighted to share that I’d stumbled upon some similar practices working with teams and groups in creating a sense of belonging on teams.

But the book goes much deeper into practices which create the needed norms for emotional intelligence to flourish on a team- which is why you need to read the book now.

It happened that I learned about Dr. Druskat’s work through a Linked In post by Dr. Druskat’s colleague, Amy Edmondson. The work of these two truly is a perfect duo because “The Emotionally Intelligence Team” provides the architectural drawing for making each team unit in your organization feel psychologically safe.
